Abstract
Hadis ve fıkıh kaynağı olarak Muvatta’, erken döneme ait önemli eserler arasında yer almaktadır. Muvatta’ın yazılış sebebi ve tarihi konusunda bazı tartışmalar vardır. Genel kanaat Muvatta’ın büyük oranda resmî otoritenin yönlendirmesiyle İmam Mâlik tarafından şekillendirilmiş olması yönündedir. Muvatta’ hem içerdiği rivayetler hem de kavramlar açısından dikkat çeken bir eserdir. Hadisler ve sahabe görüşleri Muvatta’da büyük bir yer kaplamaktadır. Hadislerin yanı sıra İmam Mâlik’in kendi görüşleri de Muvatta’ın içeriğini şekillendirmiştir. İmam Mâlik’in kullandığı sünnet, amel ve fıkıhla ilgili kavramlar ilk dönem usûl anlayışı hakkında önemli bilgiler sağlamaktadır. Muvatta’, İmam Mâlik’in birçok öğrencisi tarafından rivayet edilmiştir. Sonraki dönemlerde ise üzerinde birçok şerh yazılmıştır. Müslümanlar kadar Batılı araştırmacıların da ilgi odağında yer alan Muvatta’, şarkiyat literatüründe daha ziyade telif edildiği dönem itibariyle tartışma konusu edilmiştir

Abstract
As a source of hadīth and fiqh, al-Muwatta is among the important works of the early period of Islam. There are some debates about the reason and writing history of Muvatta. The general opinion is that actually al-Muwatta was shaped by Imam Malik following the order of the official authority. al-Muwatta is a work that attracts attention both in terms of traditions and concepts. The hadīths and the views of the Sahaba take the greatest part of al-Muvatta. Along with the hadīths, Imam Malik's views have shaped the content of al-Muwatta. Concepts which are related to sunnah, amal and fiqh in al-Muvatta provides important information about the thought of the methodology of the first period. al-Muvatta was transmitted by many students of Imam Malik. In later periods, many commentaries were written on it. al-Muwatta, which has attracted the attention of both the Westerners and Muslim scholars, has been examined by the orientalist writings significantly in relation to the date of its original composition.
